SPE Oslo student Chapter

OTD Bergen

Tuesday 14th October 2008

The SPE Oslo Section Student Chapter contingency for the ‘Offshore Technology Days’ in Bergen was Wang Zhong, Pengxin Zhang, Muhammad Junaid Yaqoob, Ida Vik Presterud and Khampira Viravong.

The team boarded the afternoon train heading to Bergen shortly after 4pm.

The trip in itself was rather uneventful, except for the extended stop at Finse which is the highest train station in Norway, where we managed to take some photos and experience firsthand, the “freshness of Scandinavia.” Yes, it was cold!

In addition to the chit chat on board, our own cultural attaché - Ida Vik Presterud, told us of the weather, landscape and other interesting things about Bergen.

We arrived in Bergen shortly after 10:30pm and proceeded on foot to CityBox, our hotel, where we found a most splendid view of the City’s lights going up to Fløibanen and the Grieg Concert Hall.

Wednesday 15th October 2008

The morning started with a brisk walk through Bergen University to Arenum –the main exhibition location. After registering to get our exhibition passes, we went to greet and speak with SPE Bergen Student Chapter.

Having done so, the exhibition was formally opened by StatOilHydro’s Margareth Øvrum and the opening show of singers and awards. We then proceeded to find the more interesting stands and get some free stuff… I mean information.

The rest of the afternoon was spent circumnavigating Bergen’s city centre and ended with a trip up the Fløibanen. The weather smiled upon us before it turned sour. We did manage to see most of Bergen, as well as a couple of rigs before the wind and rain got started.

Diner at Holberg was sublime but it was only to be outdone by other beautiful attractions of Bergens’ nightlife.

Thursday 16th October 2008

The final day started with the student session which was accompanied by heavy rain, hail and of course, sunshine.

After paying homage at Mecca – StatOilHydro, we proceeded to the exhaustive task of visiting all the stands we could possibly consider.

The evening started with the ‘Next Generation’ event – music, tapas and other activities at Vilvite.
